Description
Number Rings from Small World Learning is a board game in which arithmetic is the weapon. The box calls it "A family game of mathematics!" and holds a plastic game board, 80 rings, four trays and three dice.
You roll the three dice and combine the spots into the number of a post you want: add, subtract, multiply or divide, whichever gets you there. If the sum works out, you slide a ring of your colour over the post. The first player to capture eighteen posts with rings wins the game.
Four trays sit around the board so every player keeps their own supply of rings within reach. The box puts the age at "Over 8 years" and calls the game right "for math beginners and wiz kids alike": a player who has just learned the tables gets there by adding, while an older one can take on the harder operation.
A game for the kitchen table, where arithmetic is briefly something you do to win rather than something that has to be finished.
